Areas of Specialty: Dr. Susser is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and specializes in the epidemiology of mental disorders. His work addresses disorders such as schizophrenia, autism, and ADHD, among other mental diseases. He directs the Imprints Center for Genetic and Environmental Lifecourse Studies, which examines the early origins of numerous diseases, including cardiovascular disease, breast and ovarian cancer, psychiatric disorders, obesity and reproductive performance.Research Activities: Dr. Susser studies the developmental origins of complex mental disorders, examining the role of risk factors on health and disease throughout the life course. Dr. Susser has found that prenatal exposure to nutritional deficiency, infectious diseases and toxic chemicals, childhood environment play significant roles in the development of mental disorders. Dr. Susser’s experience elucidating the origins of neurodevelopmental
disorders brings unique perspective to the SmartTots Scientific Advisory
Board.
His other research includes the development, testing, adaptation, and dissemination of interventions for people with severe mental illness who are homeless or otherwise extremely disadvantaged. This work has extended to low and middle income countries in the Global Mental Health Program.
